The Telangana High Court on Thursday (October 9, 2025) passed an interim order staying the notification issued by the State Election Commission to conduct elections to rural local bodies.A Bench of Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice G.M. Mohiuddin, which heard the arguments in the pleas challenging 42% reservations for Backward Classes in local bodies for two consecutive days, directed the government to file the counter affidavit in the matter within four weeks. The Bench granted another two weeks of time to the petitioners to file their responses to the counter affidavit. When the Bench resumed hearing on Thursday (October 9, 2025), the Advocate General A. Sudarshan Reddy (replying to the query raised by the bench during the previous day hearing) said the government did not issue any notification after passing the Bill enhancing reservations to 42% for the BCs in March 2025. There was no need to issue any specific notification since the Bill was deemed to have been notified, he said.
After hearing the contentions of the AG, the Bench pronounced that the election notification was being stayed. It said the detailed order citing the reasons for staying the elections would be delivered soon. Some activists of BC Associations staged protest demonstrations outside the High Court main gates and raised slogans pledging support for the enhanced reservations.
